How many words can a word search have?
Up to 60, but about 10–20 per puzzle is the sweet spot — enough to keep hands busy for ten minutes, few enough that every word actually gets found. Long lists split nicely into two puzzles.
Can I make it easier or harder?
Yes — level 2 is across and down only (kindergarten), level 4 adds diagonals (grade 1+), and level 8 adds backwards words (strong grade 2+). Bigger grids are also easier on young eyes per word.
Is there an answer key?
Every puzzle prints with a matching key: a straight line runs through each hidden word. It folds away behind a toggle on the page, so printing the student copy never reveals it.
Do the puzzles work without JavaScript?
The pre-made puzzles on the Word lists pages are fully static — they print with JavaScript off. The maker page needs JavaScript to regenerate as you type.
